On May 20, Zhejiang University held a grand awards ceremony in recognition of Top 10 Teachers’ Academic Achievements and Top 10 Students’ Academic Achievements.
Top 10 Teachers’ Academic Achievements include ZDPS-2—a nano-satellite mission of the Microsat Research Center, insulin receptors which determine alternative wing morphs in planthoppers, and research into judicial archives in Longquan, etc. These research findings are at the cutting edge of their respective domains domestically and even internationally.
Top 10 Students’ Academic Achievements are also a real eye-opener. For example, the Air Faucet System, designed by a group of undergraduates from the College of Energy Engineering, clinched the most-coveted gold medal at the 2nd Global Grand Challenges Summit. Grounded in the defining feature of fluid in carrying wastes, this system can save 90% of water and achieve desirable cleansing effects by substituting high-speed air currents for water. Moreover, it utilizes the gravity of a human body to compress air and provide the source of power, thereby consuming no energy during the whole process and eventually conserving energy. The shadow-less LED operating lamp, designed by the postgraduates of the College of Optical Science and Engineering, can help doctors locate focus tissues swiftly via spectral adjustment. For instance, in a tumor surgery, the increase of light in the red wavelength will help elevate the effect of contrasts; in a gastroenteric operation, green light will be more instrumental to identifying biological tissues.
